Hoarseness Treatment

You can have dysphonia, also known as hoarseness, if your voice sounds rough or harsh. Perhaps you spoke too loudly at a noisy restaurant, or perhaps this symptom is the result of an underlying medical issue. Hoarseness should go away quickly, but if it persists for three weeks or longer, you should consult a doctor. When your voice sounds raspy, strained, or breathy, you have hoarseness (dysphonia). Both the pitch (how high or low your voice sounds) and the loudness (how loud or quiet you talk) may vary. There are several reasons why someone could get hoarse, but luckily, most of them are not dangerous and quickly go away. Your vocal folds (vocal cords) and larynx (voice box) are what allow you to talk. The airway that leads down to your lungs, known as the trachea, is located above your larynx. Your larynx has two muscular bands called the voice cords, which open and shut. When you talk, the vocal cords vibrate as a result of the air in your lungs, producing sound waves. Your voice will sound deeper if your vocal folds are relaxed (shortened). If the vocal folds tighten or lengthen, the sound will be higher pitched.
