They consist of a bone structure that is encircled by vascular tissue and a mucous membrane on the outside. Allergies, irritation, and infections can cause them to swell and inflame, obstructing their airways and causing them to produce too much mucus, which causes congestion. In a method called radiofrequency turbinate reduction, a needle-like tool is introduced into the turbinate and energy is sent to the tissue to induce a controlled damage.
